5.3 Rural society

Since the introduction of the reform and opening policy, the structure of China’s rural society has undergone a fundamental transformation. The disintegration of rural communities in the 1980s and the gradual liberalization of the household registration system since the mid-1990s (see Section 5.1.3) have had a major impact on the living conditions and employment opportunities for residents in rural regions of the country. Furthermore, considerable disparities continue to exist between the levels of development in rural and urban areas. However, it is difficult to make sweeping generalizations about China’s “rural society” and its development potential because of the vast and glaring discrepancies between the impoverished regions in the west and the economically advantaged coastal areas, and between the barren mountainous regions and the fertile loess regions. The following sections therefore focus on major trends.
